Linux Mint 20.x, Linux Mint 20.1, Linux Mint 20.2: How to install and run Wine and Windows exe files or Windows msi files such as Notepad++

Open terminal

If your operating system is 64-bit, enable 32-bit architecture (if you haven't already)
$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Download and add the repository key. Type the following
$ wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key
$ sudo apt-key add winehq.key

Add the Ubuntu 20.04 / Linux Mint 20.x repository. Type the following
$ sudo add-apt-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main'

Update packages. Type the following
$ sudo apt update

Download and install the stable branch. Type the following      
$ sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable

Download Notepad++ 32-bit
https://notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/

Right click Notepad++ executable file and select “Open With Wine Windows Program Loader”.
Tick the box to create a desktop shortcut while installing.

Start menu > Wine > Notepad++
