Compulsory voting means that the government was supported by the majority of the voters and not just the majority of people who turned up to vote.
In systems with voluntary voting, the people less likely to vote are people who are poorer, less well educated, people from new citizens and from new young voters. Important decisions should not be a choice.
Very little opposition to the compulsory voting. Compulsory voting law is implemented and enforced in Australia. Fine people if they don't vote like $100 for the first time offender.
Advantages of compulsory voting
- open society, for democracy, for values of freedom of speech, democratically elected politicians
- able to remove corrupted politicians faster from their power like 2.6 billions country money stolen and banked into a politician personal bank account, 1MDB largest kleptocracy case
- pull politics towards moderation is likely because everybody has to vote, not have to motivate their political party supporters towards much more extreme political issues, likely not populist result but just result
- marginalized people and minorities better represented, more egalitarian public policy
- drawn in new citizens and young people participation in to the political system whether they like it or not
